A local Houston poker player turned $72 into a chance at winning $10,000,000! Nick Patel, a Financial Analyst by day, and poker player by night, will be flying to Las Vegas, Nevada, in search of Poker’s infamous crown; World Champion. Patel won his opportunity while playing at Nine Poker, turning a small amount of cash into an opportunity to rub shoulders with Poker’s greatest.
Patel beat out thousands of players from around the world playing in an on-line tournament at NinePoker.com, and will represent the Lone Star state at 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas Nevada. As a winner and V.I.P.P (Very Important Poker Player), NinePoker.com is paying Nick’s $10,000 US tournament buy-in, as well as his travel expenses and hotel accommodations. While the main event will consume most of Patel’s attention, he will also have to find time to be treated to a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, a meal that includes a seventeen pound cooked lobster, one thousand dollars in spending money, jewelry, and more.
July 28th, Nick will face off against the top Texas Hold’em poker players in the world and could ultimately be playing for an estimated ten million dollars at the final table. Patel’s goal is to finish in the top ten percent, but of course he can’t help dream about the big prize. Patel almost lost his opportunity as he was down to a few hundred chips while his opponent had close to 9000. Grinding his way back from near elimination and eventually overtaking the game, Patel recalls: “He had me down to almost nothing but I grinded back and crippled him with a big hand to sway things my way.” Already, Patel shows signs of an experienced veteran. Perhaps NinePoker.com is sending the dark horse to this year’s WSOP? A nice sentiment, but not likely. Wherever Patel finishes however, achieving the opportunity to play against the best in the World is the essence of every true poker player’s dream.
